Types of Dyscalculia

Number ConceptWhen basic concepts (such as place value and large numbers) are not strong, development of more sophisticated procedures will be delayed.

May have understanding of basic number concepts, but are unable to apply the number concepts to arithmetic problems

Counting SkillDeficits in counting knowledge and counting accuracy. May have problems keeping numbers in working memory, causing frequent errors.

Procedural Disorder

Algorithms used are developmentally immature

Difficulty with sequencing multi-step procedures

Difficulties with understanding concepts of procedures and frequent mistakes in applications

Memory Disorder
Difficulty retrieving derived facts with accuracy, and often relies on concrete counting (w/ fingers)

May be related to long term memory deficit or may have difficulty with selective memory retrieval (for relevant information)

Visual-Spatial Disorder
Difficulties with spatial arrangement of work, especially when solving problems involving columns

Frequently misread numbers and symbols

Difficulty with place value and placement of numerals

Difficulty with problems involving space in area (geometry, algebra)
