Mindfulness and the Mindset of a Learner

The qualities of a learner are deeply embedded in a child’s social and emotional well-being. Like a plant growing from the rich soil of a garden, a child learns best from a foundation that has been nurtured with joy, calm, and connection. From this foundation, children become self-motivated, thoughtful, flexible learners.

Mindfulness activities feed this foundation, so that children can develop the mindset of a learner. While much of school requires children to look outside of themselves – follow directions, memorize facts, complete assignments – Mindfulness encourages children to look within themselves. It fosters creativity, confidence, and persistence. It promotes kindness, empathy, and cooperation with others. The practice of Mindfulness can then be applied to all areas of learning – Reading and Writing Workshop, Math Problem-Solving, Scientific Inquiry, Art, Music, even Athletics. The result of this kind of learning lasts a life-time.
